The TikTok party is dead
A few years ago every party was content. The 360 booth, the TikTok wall, the green screen. Then South Africa quietly fell out of love with performing its own celebrations. The "TikTok party" is down −64%, video booths −50%, Instagram walls −33% — while real, printed, in-the-moment photo experiences rise.
The 60-second version
- 📉 The content gimmicks collapsed: TikTok party −64%, video booth −50%, TikTok wall −40%, Instagram walls −33%.
- 📸 Real photo experiences rose: mirror booth +72%, instant prints +32%, selfie station +31%, photo booth +17%.
- 🤳 Even the 360 booth (−10%) and green screen (−17%) cooled — the high-tech "for the feed" props are fading.
- 🫶 The shift is from performance to presence — people want a printed memory, not a viral clip.
There was a brief, strange era when the point of a party was the footage. You hired a 360 booth, set up a TikTok wall, and the celebration doubled as a content shoot. The data shows that era is ending — and what's replacing it is quietly lovely: people want to be at their parties again, with a printed photo to keep, not a clip to post.
The collapse
The content props are dying
The decline of the "for the feed" party tech is one of the steepest in the entire project. Every prop whose whole purpose was generating shareable digital content is in sharp retreat.
Four-year change across content-creation party props.
The takeaway: TikTok party (−64%) and video booths (−50%) lead a brutal, across-the-board decline.
These props existed for one reason: to manufacture content. Their collapse is a verdict on the "every moment is content" mindset — people got tired of attending a shoot disguised as a party.
The photo experiences that grew.
The takeaway: Mirror booths (+72%) and instant prints (+32%) rise as the digital gimmicks fall.
The survivors all produce something tangible and immediate: a printed strip, a physical keepsake. The desire to capture the moment didn't die — the desire to perform it did.
The poster child
The TikTok party's freefall
No term captures the shift like the "TikTok party" itself — a concept that went from aspirational to passé faster than almost anything in the dataset.
Monthly search interest in "TikTok party".
The takeaway: A dramatic, sustained decline — down nearly two-thirds.
The "TikTok party" was always a trend about a trend. As the novelty of platform-native celebrations wore off, the concept aged in dog years. Few things in the data fell this fast.
Tangible photo experiences (photo booth, mirror booth, prints) vs digital props (360 booth, TikTok wall, green screen).
The takeaway: The tangible basket rises while the digital-gimmick basket falls.
This is the clearest framing of the backlash: the printed, physical, in-the-room keepsake is beating the screen-bound, post-it-later gimmick. Presence is winning over performance.
| Falling (perform it) | 4-yr change | Rising (keep it) | 4-yr change |
|---|---|---|---|
| TikTok party | −64% | Mirror booth | +72% |
| Video booth | −50% | Instant prints | +32% |
| TikTok wall | −40% | Selfie station | +31% |
| Instagram walls | −33% | Photo booth | +17% |
The verdict
Put the phone down
The death of the TikTok party is the most hopeful trend in this whole project. It's a small, collective decision to stop treating celebrations as content factories and start treating them as, well, celebrations. The camera isn't gone — people still want the photo. They just want to live the moment first and keep a printed piece of it, instead of performing it for an audience that wasn't even there.
The most modern party in 2026 is the one nobody live-streamed.
- Source. Aggregated South African search demand for party-tech & photo keywords, monthly, June 2022 – May 2026.
- Growth. First 12 months vs the most recent 12.
- Caveat. Some props have small bases; the consistent direction across many "content" terms strengthens the read.
